Blue Featherleg

Platycnemis pennipes (Pallas, 1771)

DESCRIPTION

Medium-sized, this species is easily identified by the pale blue color, lighter on the thorax and more intense on the abdomen, by the double black line on the side of the thorax and by the white-pale blue widened tibiae. All the abdomen segments feature a double dorsal line, thicker on the last ones. This line can be reduced to a couple of dark spots. Females are beige with brown-orange nuances. 

PHENOLOGY

It flies from May to October. 

HABITAT

It is widespread in the plain and can be frequently observed along most of the streams, but also in still waters as lakes and oxbow lakes. 

DISTRIBUTION

This species can be observed from France to the middle-eastern portion of Russia, often with large populations. Northwards it can reach Scandinavia. In the Cuneo region it is a widespread species, locally abundant in plain and hill suitable areas. Individuals in dispersal have been recorded even beyond 1900 meters above sea level.
