Sympetrum pedemontanum (Müller in Allioni, 1766)

This species is unmistakable thanks to the wide brown band on the distal half of the wings. The pterostigma is red in males and whitish in females. The legs are completely black.

Adults emerge from the end of June and flight period lasts until mid-October, with a peak between August and the beginning of September.

The larvae grow in marshes, peatbogs and still and deep waters, with vegetation, but also in slow flowing watercourses with abundant vegetation as brooks and irrigation canals.

Widespread eastwards until Japan, this species is more localized in Europe, even if in suitable habitats it can occur in high densities. In the Cuneo region it is widespread in the Parco Fluviale Gesso e Stura wetlands. It become rarer elsewhere, absent in the plain below 300 meters above sea level.
